The Three Types of Offset

2. Positive Offset
If the mounting pad is closer to the outside (the street side) of the wheel, you have a Positive Offset.
- What it does: It pulls the entire wheel further inside the wheel well.
- Where you see it: Almost all modern front-wheel-drive cars and most modern rear-wheel-drive cars come from the factory with positive offset wheels. It tucks the tires safely under the fenders.
3. Negative Offset
If the mounting pad is pushed deeper toward the inside (the brake side) of the wheel, you have a Negative Offset.
- What it does: It pushes the wheel outward, past the fenders.
- Where you see it: Lifted trucks, Jeeps, and stance/drift cars. This gives the vehicle that wide, aggressive "deep dish" look.
Why Should You Care?

- Too much Positive Offset: Your wheels get sucked too far into the wheel wells. When you turn the steering wheel, your tires will rub against the suspension components or the inner wheel well plastics. Over time, this will destroy your tires and suspension.
- Too much Negative Offset: Your wheels poke way out past your fenders. While it might look tough on a truck, every time you hit a bump, your fender will slam down onto the tire, cutting the rubber. It also puts massive stress on your wheel bearings, causing them to wear out prematurely.
